Red Eagles claw back into title contention with key win

Express were the biggest beneficiaries of all three teams vying for the Uganda Premier League title with their win over Vipers putting them back into title contention.

The 1-0 win for the Betway sponsored side moved them to 40 points and within reach of leaders URA who could only draw with Bright Stars with the two teams playing out a goalless draw.

The result moved URA to 44 points, one ahead of Vipers after the completion of match-day 20.

“We’re happy for the win," Express head coach Wasswa Bbosa said of the result before adding.

"We have been struggling with injuries but the boys worked hard. They persisted and worked as a team. We now focus on the next game."

"The most important thing is we’re still in the race. The focus was up there and we didn’t want to lose the game,” he added.

The win ended a run of three games without a win for the Red Eagles to the delight of midfielder John Byamukama who got the game’s only goal, a cracking strike from outside the area.

“First of all I am very happy to score my second goal for the club, this goal though is very important because we managed a win."

"Today’s win very important because we’re trying to close the gap on the top of the table," Byamukama noted.

The win was Express FC’s first at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende and also became the first team to win at Kitende this season as they chase a first league title since 2012.

Express return to league action on Wednesday with a home game against struggling Onduparaka before the Uganda Cup round of 16 doubleheaders against URA.smt
