European giants Manchester United of England and Italy’s AC Milan, with ten European Cups between them, will lock horns in California on Wednesday evening in the International Champions Cup which forms part of both clubs’ pre-season preparations. Viewers in Africa can catch the game in the early hours of Thursday morning, July 26th.
AC Milan look set to begin a new season in
Serie A with yet another new manager taking control of the troubled club. Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte could be lined up for a sensational return to Serie A as he looks to replace the under-fire Gennaro Gattuso, who guided Milan to their third successive sixth-place finish last term. Not since 2011, when Massimiliano Allegri was in charge, have the seven-time European champions begun a campaign with the same man at the helm.
A lack of stability off the field has plagued the team’s consistency on the field as the San Siro faithful are left to contemplate life in the depths of the Europa League once again – Milan have not qualified for the UEFA Champions League since 2013 when they reached the round of 16, losing to eventual finalists Atletico Madrid.
Jose Mourinho will be eager to impress the travelling United fans after two rather disappointing showings in their opening two fixtures on their American tour. Juan Mata salvaged a 1-1 draw against Mexican outfit Club America before the Red Devils followed that up with a drab goalless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes who currently sit bottom of the MLS Western Conference.
Alexis Sanchez made his first pre-season appearance against the Earthquakes while Nemanja Matic completed his first full training session since linking up with the squad State-side, although the Serbian is not expected to feature against Milan as he works he way back to full fitness following the extended break granted to him and a host of other first-team stars following their international duties at the World Cup in Russia.
AC Milan and Manchester United will face each other for the first time in a
friendly fixture on Wednesday, having met a total of ten times previously on the biggest competitive stage in club football. There is little to separate the pair with five victories apiece over the other.

The most recent encounter ended 7-2 to United over two-legs as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2010, at Milan’s expense. Wayne Rooney, the Red Devils’ record goal-scorer bagged a brace in each of the ties as they romped to victory. He scored a memorable stoppage time winner in the semi-final at Old Trafford three years earlier before a Milan masterclass in the second leg, spearheaded by Kaka, put the English giants to bed and sent AC through to their second final in three seasons, where they would exact their revenge over Liverpool from ‘that night in Instanbul’.
