Betway Power got their
National Basketball League season up and running with a hard fought 71-60 win over KIU Titans.
The five-time champions had lost their opening game 69-66 to reigning champions City Oilers and needed a reaction to make an early statement about their title ambitions this season.
It duly arrived against a KIU Titans team that lost at the playoff seminal stage last season, beaten finalists the season before and will again expect to be involved at the business end of the season.
The opening two quarters were closely contested with the two teams tied 13-all after the first quarter while KIU edged the second for a 32-31 half time lead.
But Power responded with Geoffrey Soro scoring eight of his game high 22 points in the third period for a 50-42 lead going into the final quarter.
The Titans never recovered with guard Syrus Kiviiri adding 16 points, five assists and recorded no turnover as
Betway Power prevailed.
Amini Mkosa and Phillip Ameny also chipped with eight points apiece for the Boniface Okello and Arnold Lando coached side. Michael Bwanga led the Titans with 15 points for their first loss.
The other weekend results also saw JKL Dolphins who Power play next record their third win in as many games to top the standings. They triumphed 77-56 over KCCA on Saturday before overcoming Kampala University 74-63.
The Dolphins turned a 35-37 deficit at halftime with Jude Ochen shooting 5-15 from three-point range for 19 points.
Daniel Monoja shined with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds on the day while Bernard Okumu and Ferdinand Odama 14 and 13 points respectively.
City Oilers, Warriors and UCU Canons are the other unbeaten sides having all won their opening two games. Power next play JKL on Saturday before facing off with Warriors a week later.
