Pius Ogena crowned 2019 USPA Rugby king

Betway Kobs' player Pius Ogena has been awarded as the best male rugby player of the year 2019.

Ogena was recognized by the Uganda Sports Press Association as the best of all the players in the country.
Kobs won the Uganda Cup and the national sevens championship that year.

Ogena also had a good season with both the Uganda 15s and the Sevens teams.

In his acceptance speech at the event held at Kampala Serena Hotel, Ogena appreciates the press for the recognition.

"I am humbled by the recognition and this will push me to do even better," he said.

"I thank my teammates and coaches because they helped me achieve all this," he added.

Samiya Ayikoru was awarded as the best female rugby player.

The Nile Special USPA Awards had been scheduled for April this year but the national lockdown disrupted all the plans.

Only a few people managed to attend the event held Wednesday evening due to the Ministry of Health guidelines that limit numbers.

Athlete Joshua Cheptegei was named the USPA Sports Personality of the Year beating off competition from fellow athlete Halimah Nakaayi and footballer Emmanuel Okwi.

Cheptegei also took home the male athlete of the year and Fans' Choice awards to complete a hat trick of accolades.
