Pirates Win Maiden League Title


For the first time in their history, Buzz Pirates will be referred to as Rugby league champions. Bobby Musinguzi's charges won the league title with a game to spare after victory over Jinja Hippos at Dam Waters, Jinja.

Betway Kobs, Pirates’ last opponent of the season, accorded the champions a guard of honour at Legends Rugby Grounds on Saturday.

Winger Justin Kimono put Kobs in the lead early in the game but Pirates responded and went on to win the game 27-12 before being presented with their trophy. Pirates’ captain Marvin Odongo scored two tries and was named man of the match.

Timothy Odongo scored the other try for Pirates in the second half and it was converted by former Rugby Cranes fly half Joel Kimuli before Joel Anguyo added two Penalties.

Kobs’ last charge resulted into a Brian Asaba try which was converted by Conrad Mukwaya. Betway Kobs finished third and will now focus on reclaiming the Uganda Cup that is held by Pirates.

Shell Rimula Rhinos finished second while last year’s winners Hima Cement Heathens finished fourth.
