Onyango counting on Chiefs’ mishap for seventh PSL title

Uganda Cranes’ captain Denis Onyango could scoop a seventh individual Premier Soccer League (PSL) medal if his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns beat final day permutations on Saturday.

The holders Sundowns have crawled from 13 points to level with log leaders Kaizer Chiefs on 56 points from 29 matches. But Chiefs lead by virtue of a better goal difference of three.

Now Sundowns, who take on relegation strugglers Black Leopards, can win a third straight and a record tenth PSL title only they better Chiefs’ result against Baroka.

The ties are complex as the Johannesburg giants are up against Leopards who are 14th on 29 points, a point ahead of Baroka while Polokwane City is bottom with 25 points.

Onyango first won the PSL with SuperSport United in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

He has already won three league honours with Sundowns in 2016, 2018 and last year. The 35-year-old could seal another if Sundowns beat the permutations.

However, there is no guarantee that the Cranes’ custodian will start in goal having missed the previous four matches for coach Pitso Mosimane’s side.

Zambian Kennedy Mweene has kept the last four encounters including the recent big 1-0 victory over Chiefs. However, Onyango has managed eight clean sheets in 21 league games this season.

And Masandawana have won the last eight meetings in all competitions against Leopards which gives them an upper hand on paper.

Yet, Baroka, who defeated Sundowns last weekend, are the bogey side for Chiefs.

Chiefs have three yet Baroka have won four including the 2018 Telkom Knockout final being the stand-out of their last 10 meetings.

The Amakhosi have not won the league in five years.
