Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) has intensified preparations ahead of the upcoming All Africa Senior Mixed Team Badminton Championship.
The seven-day tournament that is due to start on October 21 at Lugogo Indoor Arena is expected to attract 15 other countries according to Annet Nakamya the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) president.
"This is a great opportunity for us to host a competition of this magnitude," Nakamya said before adding.
"We have prepared well and even our players began residential training. We are to be represented by 18 players who had mandatory Covid-19 tests and are in good conditions.”
The tournament comes on the back of hosting the Uganda International Badminton Championship in February that Annet Nakamya the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) believes played a part in the country being chosen as hosts.
“The tournament was last held in Port Harcourt in 2019 while South Africa was supposed to host this year but this changed because of the Covid situation. Consequently, we were chosen to host the tournament based on our organization,” Nakamya stated.
Some of the players expected to feature for Uganda include Brian Kasirye, Expedito Emuddu, Friday Atama, Daniel Wanagalya, Muzafar Lubega, and Kenneth Mwambu.
The ladies team is composed of Gladys Mbabazi, Husina Kobugabe, Mable Namakoye, Shamika Fadhila, Tracy Naluwooza, and Rajab Natasha.
Up to sixteen countries are expected to take part, theses include; Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Benin, DR Congo and Zambia.
The others are, Congo Brazaville, Botswana, Mauritius, Cameroon, and Mauritius will compete in the championship that will have individual and team events.
