Express’ Kambale nominated for Fufa Awards

Express’ Kambale nominated for Fufa Awards

Defending Uganda Premier League (UPL) champions Express may not have started their title defence well but there is something to smile about in camp.

The Betway-sponsored club’s forward Eric Kambale was nominated for the Male Player of the Year Award ahead of December’s Fufa’s Awards.

Kambale will vie for the top prize alongside URA midfielder Shafik Kagimu and Vipers’ trio of Yunus Ssentamu, Azizi Kayondo and Bobosi Byaruhanga.

He lifted the Red Eagles to their first UPL crown in nine years by scoring 15 goals in the process.

Express went ahead to compete in the Cecafa Club Championships which they won by beating Malawi’s Nyasa Bullets 1-0 in the final in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on August 14.

Kambale scored thrice in that tournament, finishing as the joint top-scorer with counterpart Muzamiru Mutyaba and Azam FC’s Paul Peter.

He is however up against Kagimu who stood with five of his nine league goals last term came in the second round after their forwards Steven Mukwala and Cromwel Rwothomio dipped in form and fitness.

The bigger challenge is Ssentamu who struck twice as Vipers pummeled Bul 8-1 in the delayed Uganda Cup final early this month. Yet, Ssentamu missed the first five games of the league but he scooped the top scorer’s boot with 16 goals.

His counterparts Kayondo and Byaruhanga too won the Uganda Cup and both were part of the Hippos team which lost 2-0 to Ghana in the Caf U20 Africa Cup of Nations final in Mauritania early this year.
