Betway Kobs 21-17 Pirates
Betway Kobs started the National Sevens campaign in spectacular fashion after defeating Black Pirates 21-17 in the final to retain the Mileke Sevens title.
The Blue Army are expected to go toe to toe with Pirates until the end of the season but ensured the first victory was theirs to start the campaign on the front foot.
Adrian Kasiito opened the scoring in the final with an 80-meter dash that saw him beat the entire Pirates defense for pace.
Joseph Aredo converted to give Kobs a 7-0 lead early on but Isaac Massa replied with a try for Pirates.
Ivan Magomu fluffed the conversion and Kobs kept a two-point advantage.
Aredo then combined with Kasiito to set up Byron Oketayot for Kobs’ second try of the game. Aredo was perfect with the extras and Kobs led 14-05 going into the halftime break.
Upon resumption, Pirates scored through Desire Ayera dotted down between the posts after outpacing the Kobs defense, Timothy Kisiga added the extras and Pirates were back within two points (12-14).
Kasiito’s kick and chase led to Alhajji Manano’s try which was converted by Aredo to stretch the lead to 21-12.
With time running out, Kelvin Balagadde scored for Pirates in the corner and the Sea Robbers elected not to waste time with a conversion in a tight angle.
Kobs gathered the restart and kicked out to end the contest and collect maximum points from the first of six circuits.
Kobs had beaten Warriors, Rams and Jjengo to top Pool A on Saturday before eliminating Mongers (19-7) in the quarters and Heathens (21-19) in the semis.
“We just stuck to our game plan and I’m happy that we won. It has not been an easy ride including the semis against Heathens where we had a slow start.” Aredo, named the tournament’s MVP, said after the final.
Karim Arinaitwe (Betway KOBs) was named as the upcoming player of the tournament.
