Barca - Inter Headlines. Monstrous European Evening

Attention turns to the UEFA Champions League once again this week with the fixture list serving up some special affairs featuring former champions.

We’ll be looking at some of the encounters set to hit your screens on Wednesday:

Borussia Dortmund vs Atletico Madrid – Westfalenstadion, Dortmund

Winners of the competition in 1997 and beaten finalists in 2013 Borussia Dortmund welcome three-time beaten finalists Atletico Madrid to Germany on Wednesday for their first ever meeting. Both sides sit level on six points apiece, separated on goal-difference, after two matches each in Group A.

Dortmund are yet to concede in the Champions League so far this campaign having followed up their opening day 1-0 win over Club Brugge with a convincing 3-0 win over 2004 finalists Monaco. Die Schwarzgelben head into this fixture off the back of five straight victories in all competitions scoring 22 goals in the process. Spanish striker Paco Alcacer has been in blistering form netting seven times in his last four appearances.

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last eight matches in all competitions since defeat at Celta Vigo in La Liga at the start of September. Diego Simeone’s men have endured somewhat of a stuttered start this season and despite just one defeat from their first nine matches domestically, Los Rojiblancos find themselves fifth on the table.

Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda – Anfield, Liverpool

Not a name many people may have heard of – Crvena Zvezda – more commonly called Red Star Belgrade lifted the trophy back in 1991 for their only major European honour to date. On Wednesday they will make their way to Anfield for the duo’s first clash in 45 years.

Liverpool, five-time European champions as recently as 2005, met Red Star in the group stages of the old European Cup in 1973 when the Serbian side pulled off an historic double over their English counterparts winning 2-1 both home and away.

The Reds need to bounce back from defeat at Napoli in the previous round of matches, a result which leaves Group C finely poised after Zvezda held the Italians to an impressive draw on opening night. Last season’s top scorer Mo Salah scored the only goal of the game against Huddersfield in the Premier League this past weekend while Senegalese forward Sadio Mane is expected to return to the side after missing the weekend’s win.

Red Star have suffered just one defeat from 23 matches across all competitions so far this season – a 6-1 hammering at the hands of PSG in the last round thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Brazilian superstar Neymar – and currently lead the Serbian Superliga by a whopping seven points after just 12 matches. 25-year-old Ghanaian forward Richmond Boakye is currently the sides leading scorer with five goals to his name after his brace against Rad on Saturday.

Barcelona vs Inter Milan – Camp Nou, Barcelona

Two teams boasting eight European titles between them will come to blows at the iconic Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona on Wednesday as the Blaugrana host Internazionale of Italy.
