Betway Kobs pummel Jinja Hippos in League Opener

Betway Kobs dragged Jinja Hippos through the mud enroute to a commanding 54-00 win to start the national rugby league over the weekend in Jinja.

Even without some of the key players like Joseph Aredo, Davis Kiwalabye, James Ijongat and Robert Aziku, the Blue Army made light work of their hosts to declare their intentions of vying for the title.

Adrian Kasiito, Justin Kimono, Edgar Sseruwagi and team captain Brian Asaba were all on the score sheet while Daniel Ortega ensured he started life in blue by crossing the white chalk for a debut try.

Having finished third last season, Kobs entered the transfer market with clear intentions of strengthening the team to compete and get back to their glory days.

The team’s triumph in the Uganda Cup was timely ensured there was a 15s cup in the trophy cabin, something the team had failed to achieve in recent times.

The league title will now be the target for Fred Mudoola and his charges, and the bonus point win across the Nile is a step in the right direction.

In the other weekend games, reigning champions Black Pirates started their title defence campaign with a 50-09 win over Walukuba Barbarians at the Abel Dhaira Memorial Stadium in Jinja.

Kelvin Balagadde (2), Richard Odokere, David Busingye, Didi Ruhweza, Dennis Etuket, Baron Kasozi, and Timothy Mutesasira all scored for Pirates as they ran in eight tries against the newly promoted side.

In the first Legends derby of the season, DusuPay Warriors defeated out-of-sorts Shell Rimula Rhinos 23-07 as head coach Ivan Makmot registered his first win after retiring from playing as a Rhinos player.
