Express FC last month announced the cancellation of 18 players’ contracts as Wasswa Bbosa and his coaching staff look to reshape the squad ahead of the 2020/2021 season.
Among the few players to consequently survive the sweeping changes was Mathias Muwanga.
This is despite the goalkeeper featuring in only the second round of the season after missing the entire first round through a back injury of what turned out to be a tough season.
After overcoming that setback the custodian is now eager to repay the coach’s trust ahead of the new season that will not start at least until mid-October.
“It’s been tough on all the players but tougher for me because I was nursing my back injury but now I am ready and can’t wait for the season to start” Muwanga told the club website.
Such is the trust Bbosa seems to have in his goalkeeper that he let go of two goalkeepers Tony Kyamera and Ghanaian Joshua Adea among the players who were released.
And as Muwanga prepares for the inevitable new competition, retaining the number one spot remains his most important task.
“For me it’s all about hard work and I guarantee you am well prepared and I’ll reclaim the number one jersey,” he concluded.
Muwanga will also target more clean sheets next season having managed just two in the 3-0 win over Proline and in the crucial 1-0 win over Maroons that put clear daylight between the Betway-sponsored Red Eagles and any talk of relegation before the league was halted with five games to go.
He made a total of nine league appearances last season ending up on the winning side on three occasions.
This saw the team concede a total of 37 goals in 25 matches to finish ninth on the 16-team log before the league was halted because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
