Last 16, first leg

Borussia Monchengladbach v Manchester City

Puskas Arena, Budapest

Borussia Monchengladbach will face a stern test when they welcome Manchester City to Puskas Arena, Budapest for a UEFA Champions League Last 16, first-leg match on the evening of Wednesday 24 February 2021, kick-off at 23:00.

The match was originally scheduled to be played in Monchengladbach, but German travel restrictions on visitors from the United Kingdom has seen a change of venue to the national stadium in Hungary.

Borussia earned their place in the last 16 by finishing second in the ‘group of death’ behind Real Madrid, beating out Shakhtar Donetsk and Internazionale. Coach Marco Rose – who has been linked with rivals Borussia Dortmund – has been open about resting players domestically in order to have a full go at their English opponents.

“I'm looking [at team selection]. We have our goals, we're still in the Champions League and the [German DFB] Cup, we've been getting that on for a long time and are now entering the final stages of the season.”

Man City, meanwhile, have been in imperious form in recent weeks, backing up their unbeaten Group C campaign which saw them claim 16 points from a possible 18 in matches against Porto, Olympiakos and Olympique Marseille.

“We don't have players who can win the game by himself - we don't have a Messi, a Cristiano, Mbappe or Neymar," coach Pep Guardiola said. "We have to do it as a team.”

He added, “I wouldn't change any player that we have right now today, in this season. All of them. That's why many times I praised our captain Fernandinho, like how he helps on and off the pitch to stick together in the bad moments.”

In head-to-head terms, Monchengladbach and Man City have met in six previous UEFA club competition matches. The Citizens have claimed three wins compared to one for their German opponents, while two games have been drawn.

The teams last met in the group stage of the ‪2016-17 Champions League, with City winning 4-0 in Manchester in September 2016 before a 1-1 draw in Monchengladbach in the return game just over two months later.
