Mixed fortunes for Express as league reaches halfway point

The Uganda Premier League first round concludes with two matches starting with the Kampala derby on Friday between KCCA and SC Villa before the latter play Proline on Tuesday (December 03).

Consequently, the majority of teams including Betway-sponsored Express will not change positions regardless of results from the remaining matches.

The Red Eagles completed the first round in 11th position in what has been a stop-start season thus far.

The Red Eagles won only five times in 15 games drawing thrice and losing seven times.

Four of those victories came away from home with the George Ssimwogerere-coached side also picking back to back victories once in the 5-3 and 1-0 wins over Police and Kyetume respectively.

The other positive for Express has been the emergence of Frank Kalanda, Disan Galiwango and Frank Ssenyondo as arguably the best attacking trinity of the first round.

Kalanda leads the trio with seven goals and a remarkable six assists, the same tally as the captain Galiwango who has also scored five times to vindicate coach Ssimwogerere’s decision to play him in an advanced position.

Ssenyondo is meanwhile one of the revelations of the season thus far with five goals and three assists in his debut topflight league season.

The three consequently contributed 17 of the team’s 20 goals in the first round, a tally that is only bettered by four teams who occupy the top five positions in the league.

The Red Eagles are however three points and four places worse off at the same stage last season that also delivered five first round victories.
