McKinstry hopes Cranes to progress from Chan group

Uganda Cranes will meet neighbours Rwanda, Togo and defending champions Morocco in Group C after Caf conducted the Africa Nations Championships (Chan) tournament draw this week.

The Cranes will be featuring for a fifth successive time from April 4-25 in Cameroon after eliminating Somalia 7-2 on aggregate and Burundi 6-0 on aggregate in the qualifiers.

However, at the finals, the Cranes have never progressed. They failed the hurdle with Bobby Williamson at the Sudan 2011 edition, the South Africa 2014 and Rwanda 2016 with Micho Sredojevic and the 2018 Morocco edition with Desabre Sebastien.

Now with Johnny McKinstry, there is hope that the Cranes will break the hoodoo.

“Overall, it is an interesting group to be drawn in. There is a lot of different types of football that we to play. It is a proper Pan- African group that has a West African opponent, North African opponent and an East African opponent,” McKinstry said an interview after the draw.

“We go to the tournament very confident. We believe we can qualify for the quarter finals and make it beyond.”

Uganda scored 13 goals in the qualifiers but four scorers are ineligible to play after Patrick Kaddu, Allan Kyambadde, Taddeo Lwanga and Allan Okello all moved to clubs abroad.

“In line with the purpose of CHAN, the players were to be given expose to play professional football. We have a lot of talent in Uganda, I have said that before. Look at how we rotated the team at the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

Yes, there is no another Allan Okello or Joel Madondo in the league but equally there are other players ready to step up and take the chance,” added McKinstry.
