Uganda F4 Futures ITF Pro Circuit

Singles final: Ivan Nedelko 6-4 6-4 Tyler Lu

Doubles final: Duncan Mugabe / Anton Chekhov 6-2 6-3 Ismael Kyangawa / Ibrahim Kibet

After seven years in the doldrums, hosting any international tournament was always going to be a positive for the Cedric Babu-led Uganda Tennis Association.

It turned out to be not the only positive as the four-week Betway sponsored tournament concluded at the Lugogo tennis club on Sunday.

Uganda top seed Duncan Mugabe who had since fallen out of the world rankings ended the tournament on a high after emerging winner in the doubles category of the F4 Futures alongside Russian partner Anton Chekhov.

The pair defeated Kenyan duo Ismael Kyangawa and Ibrahim Kibet in straight sets 6-2 6-3 to win the doubles title.

The final Futures event also turned out to be the best event for the five Ugandan players with Mugabe and Boris Aguma reaching the round of 16 stage.

Mugabe failed to crack the latter stages of the singles event in all four Futures tournaments, gave the impression he could have gone even further in the men’s singles event after falling to Marco Miceli
“It is hard losing this way and especially after having many break points,” he lamented shortly after his defeat on Court 3 on Thursday morning.

Mugabe went down in straight sets 6-4 6-4 despite breaking the Italian’s serve in both sets.

Aguma had a far more difficult time, winning just two games en route to a 6-0 6-2 defeat to Serbian Goran Markovic.

The teenager had gained his first ranking point in reaching the round of 16 stage following a fairy tale run that included a 6-2 6-3 straight sets victory over Nigerian Joseph Imeh in the round-of-32.

Russian Ivan Nedelko ranked 256 in the world, dominated the month long event clinching the third of the four Futures tournaments with a 6-4 6-4 straight sets win over tournament fourth seed Tyler Lu of USA.

He won the F1 F3 and F4 Futures events of the tournaments aimed at providing the entry level of professional tournaments enabling players to eventually reach the higher level tournaments on the ATP World Tour.
