Magala counts positives as Express conclude league season with tough away point

Express concluded their 2018/2019 league campaign with a goalless draw away to Onduparaka.

The result left the Red Eagles with a unique record of finishing 10th on the 16 team log with 40 points as well as win-draw-loss record of 10-10-10.

They also scored 30 goals conceding an equal number from the 30 games played.

For assistant coach James Magala however there were a number of positives from the game under the circumstances, particularly with a Uganda Cup semi-final just five days away.

“It was a good game. We got a point against Onduparaka although we wanted three points. The problem came when we got the red card with only 22 minutes played in the second half but we have managed to defend well and avoided conceding then attacked to get goals. Though we couldn’t get goals we played well and got a point. We have been able to get 40 points we are going back home to prepare for our Thursday 9th game (Uganda Cup semi-final second leg). The boys were focused and we attacked and defended well as a team,” Magala said of the result.

Magala counts positives as Express conclude league season with tough away point

Magala had temporarily taken over head coaching duties from George Ssimwogerere who stayed behind along with the majority of first team players as the team travelled with 13 players.

This included goalkeeper Tony Kyamera playing in central defence alongside Charles Lubega in addition to rare starts for Joel Male and Billy Nkata.

“He had a very good game. We select goalkeepers in goal to play well and he did that today. He had a good game. He commanded his defence well when we were having the ball he was supporting the attack even when we were defending he was organised the positioning was good,” Magala explained.

Attention for Express now switches to Thursday’s Uganda Cup semi-final second leg at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium that is evenly poised after a 1-all first leg draw.

“One team stayed in Kampala and the other came here. There are some who will be involved on Thursday. They will rest to recover and start training on Monday so three days will be enough for them to recover and join the other group because we have a very important game on Thursday,” Magala noted.

Several first team members including John Revita, Disan Galilwango, Brian Umony, Tony Odur, Arthur Kiggundu, Pius Mbidde, Badru Nsubuga will be some of those hoping to benefit from the extended rest.
