Kiprotich awaits a tough stage at Doha Worlds

Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich will return to the World Athletics Championships for the first time since 2015 when the event takes place in Doha, Qatar in September.

The country’s most experienced marathoner Kiprotich is tentatively in the coveted three places available for Uganda in the quota system to the World’s.

It is his time of 2:07:57 ran at the Hamburg Marathon last year which grants him a ticket to Qatar.

Kiprotich's time of 2:07:57 at the Hamburg Marathon last year granted him a ticket to Qatar.

And when he returned to Hamburg last weekend, Kiprotich produced a third straight top-five finish. He finished third behind a pair of Ethiopians in 2:08:32 in Germany.

“It was tough,” said Kiprotich who endured rain and a wet tarmac in Germany.

The 2013 World champion however is concerned about the field to expect in Doha.

“I am not sure,” he stated. “The field is increasingly difficult,” the 30-year-old remarked.

By qualifying for Doha, Kiprotich will be joined by Fred Musobo and Solomon Mutai.

Musobo ran the second fastest time by a Ugandan marathoner ever when he posted 2:06:56 in second place at the Daegu Marathon in South Korea on April 7.

On the same day, Mutai, who won bronze at the 2015 Worlds in Beijing, was third at the Vienna Marathon in 2:08:25.

However, the list could change should any other ran between Kiprotich’s time in Hamburg last year and Mutai’s show in Austria in the Doha qualification period that runs from March 7, 2018 to September 6, 2019.
