Kimono, Odugo shine as Rugby Cranes defeat Zambia

Victoria Cup: Uganda 38-22 Zambia

Betway Kobs winger Justin Kimono marked his return to the Rugby Cranes team with a try in Uganda’s 38-22 victory over Zambia at Kyadondo on Saturday.

Having struggled with a knee injury for a while, Kimono only returned to the team for their final home game to repay the trust from head coach Robert Seguya.

Before Saturday, none of the Cranes wingers had crossed the white line for Uganda.

Both Paul Masendi and Daudi Ssemwami, who have featured this campaign, remain scoreless and this now puts Kimono in pole position to make the number 14 jersey his own once again.

The winger was not the only Kobs player to feature on the day.  Hooker Faraji Odugo fed off Ivan Magomu’s dazzling run to jot down on his full international debut.

Odugo filled the void left by Ronald Kanyanya and put up a performance that will leave Seguya with good selection headache on who should be his starting number 2 in the rest of the campaign.

Ian Munyani and Brian Asaba returned to the team having missed the Zimbabwe clash with concussions while Pius Ogena also started but went off injured.

Collins Kimbowa and Adrian Kasito were introduced in the second half.  Uganda scored five tries against Zambia’s three on the road to the win.

Zambia led 7-0 early on after scoring inside the first two minutes of the game. Philip Wokorach the twice split the posts before setting up Kimono for the home side’s first try.

The visitors caught the Uganda defence napping again to score their second five pointer to go ahead but the lead didn’t last as Eliphaz Emong went over after seven phases.

Odugo, Philip Wokorach and Desire Ayera got Uganda’s other tries. Ayera, who replaced injured Ogena, was named man of the match.

The Cranes will now embark on an away campaign as they face Zambia in Lusaka and Zimbabwe in Harare.
