KCCA defeat Rayon Sport to storm semis


Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC defeated home side Rayon Sport 2-1 on Tuesday to storm the semis of the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.

Mustapha Kizza and Jackson Nunda provided the goals as Mike Mutebi's side silenced a fully packed and partisan Stade de Kigali.

With manager Mike Mutebi trying out rookies Musa Ramathan and Samuel Kato at the back, the Ugandan outfit was suspect in defence whenever Rayon attacked.

Peter Magambo and Kizza completed the back line while Gift Ali and Muzamir Mutyaba provided cover to the young defence.

Allan Okello fluffed the first chance of the game after just two minutes when he was put through but his shot went wide.

Rayon had chances of their own but goalkeeper Charles Lukwago delt with the danger whenever called upon.

Jules Ulimwengu had the best opportunity for Rayon in the first half but his powerful shot was punched over by the KCCA custodian.

After a number of missed chances on both sides, Musatapha Kiizza finally put the Ugandan champions ahead in the 33rd minute with a powerful shot after an Okello cut back that gave the left back clear sight of goal.

It proved to be the difference as the two sides went into the half-time.

Just three minutes after restart, Rayon leveled matters  through new signing Herve Rugwiro.

Momentum shifted after the goal as Rayon pushed for the final punch albeit in vain.

Allan Okello had KCCA's best chance before the second goal but opted for the near post which was well covered by the Rayon shot stopper.

KCCA's second goal would come in the 67th minute after two Rayon players collided to lose possession and were caught out of position.

Mutyaba, from the near post found  Nunda at the far post and the make shift striker headed in what turned out to be the winner.

Meanwhile defending champions Azam FC defeated Congo giants TP Mazembe in the first quarter final.
