KCCA, Vipers aim to keep flying start

The delayed StarTimes Uganda Premier League finally got underway with 21 goals struck in seven matches across the country last weekend, and bookmakers’ favorites KCCA and Vipers kept the expectations intact with narrow victories on Friday.

Defending champions Vipers needed a late goal from substitute and debutant Davis Kasirye to beat Ndejje University which provided Mexican coach Javier Martinez Espinoza his first competitive win at Kitende.

But the breakthrough for Kasirye, who came on for lanky Tito Okello, is further underlined by the fact that it was his first goal in the league in 2018 having joined SC Villa in January.

Now the journeyman Kasirye’s effort pushes Espinoza into selection drama as Vipers seek to keep a flying start when they visit Maroons at Luzira on Tuesday.

This encounter ended in a stalemate both home and away last season but Maroons’ intent grows by virtue of their opening 3-1 season loss to Bright Stars in Mwererwe.

Maroons’ coaches George Nsimbe and his assistant David Obua have a task of nullifying the threat from Vipers’ creative midfielders Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye and Moses Waiswa.

Not from Luzira, KCCA will as well hope to make most of home advantage as they host Kirinya-Jinja SS in a second of the four home ties at Lugogo out of five opening matches.

Mike Mutebi’s charges got away with a 2-1 victory over Tooro United with teenager Allan Okello’s class showing yet again with a 30-yard goal.

Mutebi has a tougher fixture on paper with visiting Kirinya having drawn 2-2 with record champions SC Villa.

Joel Madondo netted a brace in that one and his coach Charles Ayiekoh wants him to be the thorn in KCCA’s flesh.

Meanwhile, Villa will cherish their first win in Namboole on Wednesday when they host Onduparaka, who relied on evergreen Vianney Sekajugo and goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato’s penalty to beat Nyamityobora on Day One.

Reinstated back in the league after switching to a more satisfying venue at Kavumba, Mbarara City start their quest away at Ndejje.

Revamped Express hosts URA while Paidha Black Angels faithful will watch their first home topflight encounter against rather quiet yet focused Police at the Green Light Stadium in Arua on Wednesday.
