Juve out to defend top spot

2019/20 UEFA Champions League

Matchday 5

26-27 November 2019

Juventus will look to defend top spot in Group D of the UEFA Champions League when they host Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday 26 November 2019, kick-off at 22:00 CAT.

Juventus’ last outing in the Champions League was a 2-1 win away to Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia, where goals from Aaron Ramsey and Douglas Costa secured their progression into the knockout phase. The Italians top the group with 10 points and an unbeaten record.

“I think our team adapts well to the kind of football that is needed in every situation. We play the football our coach loves most of the time but we are also ready to sufferer together when we have to,” said Juventus captain and defender Leonardo Bonucci. “We have achieved the first objective of the season [in qualifying for the knockout phase of the Champions League].”

Atletico are just one win away from qualification (they are placed second with seven points) but they missed out on the chance to book an early spot in the last 16 when they were beaten 2-1 in Germany by Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

“These things happen in football. They’re a really strong team physically and there was a good battle, nothing more. We will have to improve for out next match against Juventus,” said Atletico midfielder Saul.

In head-to-head stats, Juventus and Atletico have met in five previous European matches. The Rojiblancos have claimed two wins compared to one for the Bianconeri, while two games have been drawn.

When the teams met in Madrid back in September they played out a 2-2 draw: Juve led 2-0 thanks to goals from Juan Cuadrado and Blaise Matuidi, but Atletico fought back to force a draw thanks to Stefan Savic and Hector Herrera.
