Another lockdown on sport but Express must wait

The announcement of a 42-day lockdown by President Museveni is one that will affect various aspects of life including sports and football in particular.

The ban on sports came at a time Express FC were topping the Startimes Uganda Premier League log with four games left on their schedule.

Vipers SC were last season handed the title with five games to play as the season could not go on due to a lockdown imposed on sport to manage the COVID-19 pandemic.

Everyone in sport might be praying for a chance to return to play but the Red Eagles will certainly fancy the idea of being crowned right away.

Following the president’s address, FUFA called off league games but insisted they would give the league every chance to see it end on the field of play.

Former Express President and FUFA 3rd Vice president Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi has already written to the federation asking them to consider handing Mukwano Gw’abangi the title.

Competition rules say champions can be determined if 75% of the league has been played and the season can’t go on.

By the time the league was suspended, Express were top of the log with 58 points, one point ahead of second-placed URA FC.

Vipers are also still in the race on 56 points.

Wakiso Giants, MYDA, BUL and KCCA are the remaining fixtures for Wasswa Bbosa’s charges.

Reports suggest that FUFA are one of other federations planning to meet and convince the Prime Minister to allow them to complete their seasons under strict observation of all the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
