Betway Kobs aim for Jinja Sevens title

Betway Kobs will be looking to defend the Jinja Sevens tournament at Dam Waters in Jinja this weekend.

Having fallen 21-7 in the final of the Kyadondo Sevens two weeks ago, the defending champions will be in town to defend one of the circuits they lifted enroute to the title last year.

Kobs coach Edmond Tumusiime believes his side played well despite falling short in the final of the first circuit.

"We played well but Pirates were the better side in the final and they took the day," Tumusiime said of the team's performance in the first circuit.

With 19 points collected from Kyadondo, Kobs are now second on the log and have to win in Jinja or at least keep Pirates within touching distance.

Pirates served a hint of what should be expected of them this season when they lifted the Martyrs 7s invitational tournament hosted by Walukuba on June 3.

They then sailed through their group stages games at Kyadondo with wins over Stallions, Buffaloes and Jinja Hippos.

Pirates' good run saw them only concede in the semi-final as they ran over hosts Hima Cement Heathens 35-10 before dominating Kobs in the final.

Tasked with leading the team in these series, captain Isaac Massa believes Pirates have good squad depth to allow them dominate this season.

With the two senior national teams (Rugby Cranes and Rugby Sevens) in action this year, teams will have to do without some of their key players for some of the events later on.

Betway Kobs have won the national sevens championship for the last three years and are in search of a 4-peat.
