Win or bust for Kobs at Cecafa

The final of this year’s Cecafa Challenge Cup will not be played until July 30.

But for record 15-time champions Uganda, there appears to be two more “finals” they have to negotiate before reaching that date.

This is after Tanzania’s 1-0 win over DR Congo left the Kobs in second position with one point making today’s meeting against the Tanzanians a must-win.

“There’s no excuse," Byekwaso said of the team’s permutations in the three-team group.

"We have to come all out because once we do not win we are of the competition. We know it is going to be a hard game but we will do everything possible to win,” he added.

Much of his focus will be on how to sharpen the team’s attack that has now gone three games without a goal after losing 2-0 and playing out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in two build-up games.

“Tactically we’ve done what we think will help us because we saw how Tanzanians play. They play good football, very intelligent,” added Byekwaso.

He could consequently make changes going forward with Sam Ssenyonjo having offered better hold up play after replacing Derrick Kakooza who was off-colour in the opening game.

Najib Yiga could also start after he offered more penetration in his cameo after replacing Steven Mukwala.

A midfield readjustment is also anticipated with Steven Sserwada having limped out of the first game while Karim Watambala failed to provide any attacking verve.

They play against Tanzanian opposition who expect to be fresher having only arrived in Ethiopia hours before Wednesday’s match.

“It was very difficult for us because my team arrived on Wednesday morning and did not train enough for this tournament."

"But I am glad we managed to get the vital win in the opening match against a strong side,” Tanzania coach Kim Poulsen stated.

Kenya Emerging Stars became the first team to reach the semifinal following a 2-0 win over South Sudan and a 3-0 thrashing of Djibouti.
