Byekwaso calls for improvement as Kobs make slow Cecafa start

Kobs head coach Morley Byekwaso has called for efficiency in front of goal after his side opened the Cecafa title defence with a goalless draw against DR Congo.

The result means Uganda must now win their final group game against Tanzania to stand any chance of reaching the semifinals of this year’s competition being played in Ethiopia.

“We have to go back to the boardroom and see how to sharpen our attack,” Byekwaso opined after the game against DR Congo.

This was after seeing his side spurn at least two good goal scoring opportunities as they made the brighter start of the two teams.

“We created many chances in the first half, put in a lot of crosses but our strikers were not effective enough to put away these chances. In the second half, the game was balanced. I think it was a fair result,” explained Byekwaso.

The best of those opportunities fell to striker Derrick Kakooza who side-footed wide after a good cross from Enoch Walusimbi.

“We failed to take away our chances and the game changes. If you play against an experienced side they see what you are planning.

"You can’t beat them the same way repeatedly because they have experienced players and coaches but if we had taken our chances then it would be different,” he added.

Byekwaso however reserved praise for his defenders and midfielders against physical opponents who afforded the Ugandan team little time on the ball.

“They did a great job playing DR Congo, which is not easy. They are well built and were beating us in one on one situations and were good in wing play,” he observed.

He will retain an interest in the Congolese who return to action on Wednesday against Tanzania who are the Kobs’ Saturday opponents.

There are nine teams in groups of three for this year’s regional competition that features under-23 and three overage players.
