JKL earn FIBA Africa Women's Champions Cup ticket

Uganda teams continued to make an impression in regional basketball tournaments with the latest being reigning National Basketball League champions JKL Dolphins.

This is after they added the Fiba Africa Zone V Women Championships title to their trophy cabinet in Tanzania over the weekend.

JKL defeated Kenyan side Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 63-56 in the final played in Dar Es Salaam on Saturday evening.

The result capped a fine display of resilience for the side who enrolled the services of coach Mandy Juruni for the tournament.

They had earlier lost 58-57 to the same side in the group stages in a result that left them having to face another Kenyan side in defending champions Equity Bank in the semifinals.

But they prevailed 62-53 to storm the finals and in the process secure qualification to the FIBA Africa Women's Champions Cup as one of the best two teams in the Zone V region.

JKL went into the tournament with several additions to their roster including the likes of Sarah Ageno, Zaina Lokwameri Rose Akon and Brendah Ekone.

But it was the old guard Flavia Oketcho who impressed most particularly in the semifinal with a game high 15 points.

In the final, Player of the game Rose Akon scored a game high 15 points and picked 10 rebounds while Oketcho was awarded the MVP title for her overall exploits.

JKL Lady Dolphins have now joined the reigning champions Ferroviario de Maputo of Mozambique and hosts MB2ALL as the three sides that have automatically qualified for the event.

Nine slots are available for the 12-team showpiece with more regional qualifiers coming up next month across Africa. Angolan giants Inter Clube remain the most decorated side with five titles won in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The tournament in Tanzania also proved particularly fruitful for Juruni who stayed behind after guiding the men’s side City Oilers to secure progression to the elite round of 16.
The Oilers defeated home side JKT 85-56 for their third straight win of the qualifier before losing the final to Rwandan side Patriots, the other team to qualify from the regional tournament.
