Jersey opens Uganda’s long route to ODI status

That path has been greeted with a promotion-demotion-demotion-promotion phase with the senior national men’s team gritting teeth between the now defunct ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three and Four.

After Uganda took the wooden spoon at the ICC WCL Division Three a year ago in Oman, now the Cricket Cranes have to play through the new ICC World Cup Challenge League B in the route to the 2023 ODI World Cup.

WCCL B will played in three rounds with the first having Uganda head to Oman again with five other nations Jersey, Kenya, Bermuda, Hong Kong and Italy from November 30 – December 13.

Brian Masaba

The Cricket Cranes begin the long route to an ODI (One Day International) status against Jersey at the Al Amerat OC Turf 1 on December 2.

“Every game is as important as the last, especially because of the League like format of the competition. The order of the games changes nothing in terms of our preparation and goals for the tournament,” Uganda’s captain Brian Masaba stated.

It will be the third time Uganda will be meeting Jersey after edging them by seven runs in a replay at ICC WCL Division Four in Malaysia 18 months back.

“It is a good game to start,” stated Masaba. “We know a few of their players so we will have some information going into the game,” he added.

Bar Uganda and Italy, all other teams have been playing at the ICC Global World Twenty20 Qualifier in UAE where Hong Kong came eighth, Jersey 11th and Kenya a place behind and Bermuda 13th out of 14 teams.

Uganda will rest for three days before facing eastern neighbours Kenya on December 5 and the schedule intensifies with a contest against 2007 ODI World Cup finalists Bermuda a day later.

Then comes another three-day break before the Cranes engage Italy for the first time in six years and Hong Kong completes the menu two days later on December 11.

The Cricket Cranes are currently on a Tour of Zimbabwe; playing matches against Old Hararians, Takashinga and Zimbabwe’s U19s in Harare.
