Ikong counts on ‘best’ roster as Betway Power engage Oilers

Joseph Ikong is one of the three surviving members including Isaac Afidra and Michael Kojo from the current Betway Power team that last won the National Basketball League in 2011. The five-time champions have since played two more finals both against City Oilers.

They were swept 4-0 in 2014 before the surprise Betway boost in 2016 only saw them manage one win as they lost the best of seven series 4-1.

Consequently he will be among the big legion of expected Betway Power supporters hoping it is third time lucky as they start the best-of-seven series final against the Oilers this evening at the Lugogo Arena. And the experienced Silverbacks forward has already been able to identify some positives ahead of what should be a tough series against the reigning champions dubbed the “race for sixth.”

“We have a better roster,” Ikong stated when reminded about the team’s two previous finals results against the Oilers. Reason for his confidence is the performance of two off-season additions Geoffrey Soro and Stephen Wundi as Power went for quality rather than quantity as they seek to make amends against the Oilers. The pair scored 22 and 21 points respectively in the 85-72 game four victory over JKL as the Betway sponsored Power clinched a 3-1 series win.

Power forward Soro is the third best scorer in the league averaging 12 points and should form a formidable front court alongside Phillip Ameny and Michael Kojo.

The two teams split the regular season meetings with Power wining 64-56 in the first round while City Oilers won 65-57 in the second round. Power though managed to cling onto top seed status with a 19-3 record closely followed by City Oilers at 18 -4. Both teams also have identical 4-1 records in the playoffs with Power defeating Ndejje University 2-0 in the best-of-three quarterfinals.
