I found it easy to fit in at Betway Kobs -Ogena

A Ugandan rugby story of recent times might be regarded incomplete if it doesn't feature the name Pius Ogena.

The versatile player has made a name for himself and is one of the mainstays on both the national 15s and 7s teams.

Having come through the ranks at Kyadondo Rugby Club, Ogena was expected to play for Heathens.

He played for Toyota Buffaloes and then crossed the border to feature for Kabras Sugar in Kenya.

He was, however, released by Kabras and came back home to join not Heathens but Betway Kobs.

“It was a hard decision to make on my own, I had to talk to some people who helped in arriving at the final decision,” Ogena told Daily Monitor newspaper in a recent interview.

Ogena's decision rubbed those around Kyadondo the wrong way but his first season helped him settle in quickly. "Some people didn't like the idea but others supported it," he said.

With Kobs, he won the Uganda Cup, the National Sevens Circuit, where he was voted Most Valuable Player and helped Kobs to a second place finish in the Nile Special Premiership.

He was also crowned Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Rugby Player of the Year ahead of Phillip Wokorach and Adrian Kasito.

“It was a great season indeed. I found no difficulty in adapting. I had lined up with most Kobs players before."

With the Rugby Cranes, Ogena had played alongside Justin Kimono, Brian Odongo, Adrian Kasito, Ian Munyani, Collin Kimbowa and Timothy Mudoola.

In his second season, Kobs defeated Heathens in the final to lift the Uganda Cup but saw the national league season disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic that led to indefinite suspension of sport.
