How special is the ;Special One'?

Although Jose Mourinho was not successful as a footballer, he has become one of the best coaches of all time.

As a child, Mourinho harboured a dream of becoming a professional football player - following in the footsteps of his father, Felix Mourinho.

Felix played for Os Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal as a goalkeeper, earning one cap for Portugal in the course of his career.

Jose joined the Belenenses youth team and graduated to the senior level where he played at Rio Ave (where his father was coach), Belenenses and Sesimbra as a midfielder.

However, the man nicknamed the 'Special One' lacked the requisite pace and power to become a professional, and rather chose to focus on becoming a football coach instead.

The Special One attended coaching courses held by the English and Scottish Football Associations, and his chance to become a top-tier manager arrived in September 2000.

Mourinho moved up from his role as assistant manager at Portuguese football heavyweights Benfica to replace manager Jupp Heynckes after the fourth week of the Primeira Liga.

Before that, the Special One had worked as Bobby Robson's assistant at Portuguese clubs Sporting CP and FC Porto as well as Spanish giants FC Barcelona where he served under Louis Van Gaal.

"One of the most important things I learnt from Bobby Robson is that when you win, you shouldn't assume you are the team, and when you lose, you shouldn't think you are rubbish," Mourinho said.

Mourinho had a poor relationship with Benfica president Manuel Vilarinho and left the club on 5 December 2000 after just nine league games in charge.

Upon later reflection, Vilarinho rued his poor judgement and expressed his frustration at losing Mourinho.

The Special One found a new managerial post in July 2001 with União de Leiria and during his time at the club, the team was on a run contesting places as high as third and fourth in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Noted for his tactical prowess, game management and adaptability to different situations, Mourinho's successes at Leiria did not go unrecognised and he caught the attention of larger Portuguese clubs before he joined FC Porto in January 2002.

During his time with Porto he won the Primeira Liga twice, a Taça de Portugal, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, the latter being the club's first European Cup title since 1987.

The Special One's success earned him a move to England with Chelsea in 2004 where he won two Premier League titles, a FA Cup and two League Cups in his three seasons at the club.

"Liverpool are a team that interests everyone and Chelsea does not interest me so much because it is a new project with lots of money invested in it," Mourinho said on Telegraph in 2004 before he joined Chelsea.

"I think it is a project which, if the club fail to win everything, then [Roman] Abramovich could retire and take the money out of the club. It's an uncertain project. It is interesting for a coach to have the money to hire quality players but you never know if a project like this will bring success."

In 2008, Mourinho joined Italian giants Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A title in his first season and two years later he made history. The Portuguese legend led Inter to a European treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League (the first time an Italian club has achieved this).

Mourinho then signed with Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga with a record points tally, becoming the fifth coach to have won league titles in four countries. He also won a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de Espana.

In 2013, Mourinho returned to Chelsea where he won another league title and a League Cup, but was dismissed two years later after a poor run of results.

The journeyman moved to Manchester United in 2016 and won the UEFA Europa League, League Cup and FA Community Shield during his two-year spell with the club.

Mourinho, who is one of the most decorated managers of all time moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 and is expected to bring back the club's glory days.
