Hornets Hoping to Cause FA Cup Upset

2018/19 FA CUP FINAL

Manchester City vs Watford

Wembley Stadium, London
Saturday, May 18th
Kick-off at 19:00 (7pm)

Watford achieved their best ever-finish in the FA Cup when they finished as runners-up to Everton at the old Wembley back in 1984. The Hornets head to the National Stadium this weekend looking to go one better in 2019 as they face yet another team in blue – the newly crowned Premier League Champions, Manchester City.

Hornets Hoping to Cause FA Cup Upset

It seems an eternity since the curtains came down on yet another phenomenal season in the English top-flight (it was only six days ago) with the Cityzens defending their crown for their first time in their history in some style by beating Brighton 4-1 at the Amex. It didn’t come without the customary final-day jitters, however, as Pep Guardiola’s side had to do things the hard way – coming from behind after Glenn Murray’s 27th minute goal had put the Seagulls ahead, for a record 15th league win in-a-row.

Manchester City recent results:

12/05 – Brighton 1-4 Man City
06/05 – Man City 1-0 Leicester
28/04 – Burnley 0-1 Man City

Watford, under Javi Gracia – their fourth head coach in as many seasons since gaining promotion back to Premier League in 2015 – will be rather disappointed at finishing outside the top-half after the season they had. Ultimately, having to settle for 11th place was not in the managers plans at the beginning of the campaign but ask any Hornet fan and they would certainly trade that in for a first-ever FA Cup triumph. Since their stunning comeback against Wolves in the semi-finals, Watford have stalled, winning just one of their five league encounters – a 2-1 win at bottom club Huddersfield Town.

Watford recent results:

12/05 – Watford 1-4 West Ham
05/05 – Chelsea 3-0 Watford
27/04 – Watford 1-2 Wolves

Phil Foden, once a ball boy for the Sky Blues, could fulfil a boyhood dream by appearing in the oldest fixture in English football. City could be without the midfield duo of Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandihno while full-back Benjamin Mendy is also expected to miss out.

Watford will welcome back Greek defender Jose Holebas for the final after his red card that he received in the final day defeat to West Ham was rescinded.

This will be the 29th meeting between these two clubs.

Watford have not beaten City in any competition since a 1-0 in the old 2nd Division back in 1989 – a run of 15 successive matches.

In the last 10 matches between the pair, since 2013, there have been a whopping 38 goals scored at an average of 3.8 per game.

City came away 2-1 victors from Vicarage Road back in December. Raheem Sterling was the star of the show in the reverse fixture, bagging a stunning hat-trick in an equally straight-forward 3-1 win at the Etihad in March.
The 2019 PFA Young Player of the Year – Sterling – has 6 goals and 1 assist in just 6 appearances against the London outfit.
