Focus Turns To League After Uganda Cup

With Buzz Pirates successfully lifting their second Uganda Cup title, teams will now turn their attention to the National Rugby League.

The Uganda Rugby Union has already released the 2017/2018 Rugby Premiership schedules and the league is planned to kickoff November 18. Betway Kobs, who fell to Pirates in the semifinal of the Uganda Cup, will make a short trip to Makerere where they will take on Makerere Rams on opening day. The Legends outfit will hope for better fortunes this season having finished third in the previous campaign. Under the leadership of Ronnie Lutakome, Kobs find themselves in a position of silencing critics.

The departure of big names at the club have left many debating whether the side will be good enough for the league campaign. Joseph Aredo, Ramathan Govule, Keith Sseruyange, Michael Amolo and Cyrus Wathum are some of the key players to have left the club.

For defending champions Hima Cement Heathens, a trip to to Jinja to play newcomers Hippos at Dam Waters, awaits their new-look side. Muhammad Athiyo's troops will have to do it in the absence of Philip Wokorach, Asuman Mugerwa, Aaron Ofoyrwoth and Brian Kikawa. Warriors will open the season in a Legends derby as they take on the moneyed Rimula Rhinos. Toyota Buffaloes will head to the House of Pain in Entebbe to take on Plascon Mongers.

University League:

Having taken an unannounced break for some time, the university rugby league is set to return. Uganda Christian University, Makerere University Business School, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, Busoga University and Kampala International University will tussle it out for bragging rights in a round robin format for ten weeks.
