Express to wait as Fufa, UPL delay season start

Local football body Fufa and the Uganda Premier League (UPL) announced that the 2020-2021 season will be delayed by a month to allow parties to prepare adequately.

“As the federation and UPL,” Fufa first vice president Justus Mugisha said during the UPL general assembly at Ridar Hotel, Seeta in Mukono on at the weekend.

“We have been making preparations, licensing and everything to make sure we start on October 17.”

“We have been negotiating with the government. Fortunately or unfortunately we were allowed to play but the conditions under which we are supposed to play the matches are not favourable as we talk now for the league to resume on October 17.”

“Therefore in order to allow more time for negotiations and preparations, we have postponed (league resumption) by one month,” he added.

It means that the new season can tentatively kick-off on November 17, meaning that six-time champions Express have some extra time to prepare.

Coach Wasswa Bbosa has been busy in the transfer window making about 12 signings and the push could offer him a chance to test his unit more.

Dennis Mugerwa, Denis Otim and Cryspus Kusiima, Isaac Nsengiyunva, Abel Eturude, Godfrey Lwesibawa, Ibrahim Kayiwa, Mahad Kakooza, Baker Sakah, Faisal Ssekyanzi and forwards Charles Musiige and Kiragga Mustafa are new faces that will need to gel together.

Express finished ninth last season with 31 points.
