Express stayed on course to win a record 11
th Stanbic Uganda Cup title after reaching the semi-finals of the this year’s competition with a 1-0 win over BUL at the
Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Monday evening.
Brian Umony got the game’s only goal inside the opening two minutes before the team held out for victory and exert revenge on their opponents who claimed a similar result in coach George Ssemwogerere’s first game.
He was set up by a moment of magic from Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye who turned his marker on the byline for Umony to connected assuredly with his left foot for his second goal in Express colours.
It was one they held onto comfortably in what turned into a scrappy encounter with BUL resorting to long range strikes with one from Pierre Kambale testing Express goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga.
Coach Ssemwogerere made his first change on 65 minutes when Zaga was replaced by Davis Mayanja after suffering an injury.
Mayanja then missed a chance to double Express' lead deep into the second half making up his mind late when left with only goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo to beat after being set up by good interplay involving Umony and Michael Birungi.
Ibrahim Kayiwa was the next one to get through on goal but his chance was easily snuffed out by the on-rushing Ssebwalunyo.
Express then made two further changes with Kayiwa withdrawn for Tony Odur while Pius Mbidde came on for Disan Galiwango before holding out for victory.
Express now join Bright Stars and Big League side Kyetume as the other semi-finalists as another Big League side Proline and reigning Uganda league champions Vipers face off today for the final slot.
