Express outshine Bright Stars

Express gained a psychological boost over Bright Stars as they prepare for next week’s Uganda Cup semifinal return leg by recording a comfortable 3-1 victory at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Wednesday.

The two teams who will play each other thrice in a space of two weeks had last Sunday played out a 1-1 draw on the first leg in Mwererwe.

This time though the Red Eagles proved superior and showed early intention when Ibrahim Kayiwa headed in Sadiq Sekyembe’s cross for the opening goal after two minutes.

The duo, two of nine changes made by coach George Ssimwogerere from Sunday’s Uganda Cup game impressed particularly Sekyembe who was named man of the match after assisting all three goals.

The second goal arrived 10 minutes before the break when Sekyembe’s corner kick was met by Ivan Ocholit.

Tony Odur then also got in on the act also heading in a Sekyembe free kick three minutes into the second half.

“I don’t speak about my players because I prepare them but the problem we have with the fans they want us to give birth to a kid then send it to fetch water straight away and make it do a lot of things,” Ssimwogerere said afterwards as he made comparisons with his previous time at the club.

“But for me I prepare my players. I have coached Ocholit for 2 months without selecting him so it’s time for him to show what he can do.”

“For example I was given Moses Aduny here in Express in 2007 when he couldn’t even play well then I prepared him for six months then I gave him a game against Villa at Namboole and he scored a goal.”

“Then got even a national call up so I prepare the player and take him where he is supposed to be because if they don’t play well it pains me an vice versa. He (Ocholit) still wanted to play but I substituted him because he got a small injury and I wanted to prepare him for the next game,” he added.

The result helped Express leapfrog Bright Stars into ninth position on the log with 39 points with one game to the end of the league season. That will come on Saturday when the Red Eagles travel to Arua to play Onduparaka.
