Express completed the first round of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League 15 points behind leaders KCCA. Consequently the Uganda Cup represents the biggest opportunity for the Red Eagles to win a trophy this season.
They return to action on Thursday evening when they play Water at the round of 32 stage of this season’s competition. Basing on history, the Betway sponsored side seem to enjoy the tournament.
The Red Eagles have accumulated a joint high 10 Uganda Cup titles and four runner-up finishes. They will start as favourites against Big League side Water in a game that will also be played at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium where the second tier side also host their games.
Having played out a goalless draw against Ndejje University in their previous outing, the Kefa Kisala coached side will hope for a return to form for their forwards.
Tony Odur with four goals has scored the most goals this season with Eric Kambale, Michael Birungi and Ibrahim Kayiwa all finding the back of the net three times in the league.
The Red Eagles will also look to the return of midfielder Badru Nsubuga who missed the game against Ndejje after accumulating three yellow cards.
Robben Paul Kabuye has meanwhile recovered from a groin injury but the game is likely to come too soon for him. Defender Arthur Kigundu is again expected to miss out despite recovering from a muscle injury with his absence down to malaria.
Goalkeeper Tony Kyamera will also be out due to malaria with Mathias Muwanga likely to take up his place in the team. Express reached this stage after would be hosts Paidha Black Angels failed to make it in time for the two sides’ game in Arua.
They also last won the tournament in 2007 and will be wary of another cup upset after losing to another Big League side Kitara at the round of 32 stage last year.
