Express eyes summit in MYDA scalp

The off-pitch adjustments and organization has yielded early results for Express Football Club evidenced by a stellar start to the 2020-2021 Uganda Premier League season.

Following eight rounds of matches, the Red Eagles are flying high with 16 points after four wins and as many stalemates.

The Wankulukuku-based side is third on the log, on-level with Police who have a better goal difference while holders Vipers are top with 18 points.

Express is one of the three unbeaten sides left in the league, along with Vipers and Wakiso Giants.

And one can’t take it away that Express has made tremendous improvements on the pitch, especially with eight points coming from matches already against URA, Vipers, SC Villa, and KCCA.

Last season, Express picked a total of 28 points from 24 outings, and this season yet now, they have more than half that tally from just single-digit outings.

Their recent 4-0 drabbing of BuL in Jinja on Saturday paints a picture of a team growing into its groove.

And with coach Wasswa Bbosa’s tactics, the Betway-sponsored side has the best defence in the league. They have conceded just five goals and goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga has kept three clean sheets.

It may still be early days but Express has a chance to rise to the summit when they visit struggling Myda at the King George IV Memorial Stadium in Tororo on Tuesday.

“We are well prepared and we are in good shape,” Bbosa’s assistant James Odoch. “I know we will return victorious.”

Against BuL, Express was clinical with goals from defenders Murushid Jjuuko and Arthur Kiggundu as well as forwards George Senkaaba and Allan Kayiwa.

If they show up with similar mojo, Myda could be up for another thorough beating.

The newcomers Myda have conceded the highest number of goals thus far - 28 - including the 5-0 loss to KCCA in Lugogo on Saturday as well as 7-0 loss to Vipers in Kitende on February 6.

Myda coach Samadu Musafiri will have to put out the right notes to stop Express’ forward line of Senkaaba, Eric Kambale, and Godfrey Lwesibawa.

Should Express win, they will go top in case Vipers loses to BUL at Kitende. KCCA’s visit to Wakiso Giants presents another thrilling contest to watch.
