Helen Buteme is rugby through and through but an opportunity to work with Express FC is one she has decided to give a shot.
The former Uganda Rugby international and national team coach has joined the coaching team at Wankulukuku as the strength and conditioning coach.
Buteme will be tasked with establishing and maintaining a strength and conditioning program to improve athletic performance and teaching fitness and movement skills.
The sports season in Uganda is still on hold but whenever the green light is given, Buteme will be ready.
“When I met the club CEO (Isaac Mwesigwa) at the beginning of this year,” Buteme told the club website upon confirmation of the appointment before adding.
“He told me about his plans for Express basically to bring back its glory days and seeing that am also a strength and conditioning coach, he wanted me to join the technical team and take over the conditioning needs for the team.”
She holds a level B Conditioning License from Germany's Leipzig University.
“It's a challenge I couldn’t resist and so I will be making sure that the players are in the best possible shape to execute the coach’s game plans and ensuring that they are as injury free as possible," she added.
Buteme will also be assisting the medical team with the rehabilitation of injured players.
In her active years as a sports woman, Buteme played rugby for the national 7s and 15s teams between 2005 and 2014.
She won three MVP awards (2004,2005 and 2008).
After working as strength and conditioning coach of the two teams for some time, she was named head coach of the 7s side in 2016, a role she held until 2019 when she resigned.
Express have made several additions starting with the CEO, Public Relations Officer and now Buteme in the S&C department.
Their recruitment is still ongoing as the team attempt to get back to their glory days of winning.
