Cranes coach names team for Dubai Camp

Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry will have some time to work with his squad following a lengthy suspension of football in the country.

The tactician and his technical team will have the players in a camp organised to last ten days in Dubai.

The team had been expected to depart on Sunday evening but had their trip delayed until Monday due to delays in their travel clearance.

There are 26 players selected for the camp with several absentees due the COVID-19 travel restrictions and injuries.

"A number of players were unfortunately ruled out from consideration for the training camp due to Covid-19 travel restrictions applicable to them, or through injury," McKinstry revealed on Sunday.

McKinstry, however, believes the camp presents a great opportunity for a large quota of the foreign based players alongside the best players in the Uganda premier league to prepare for upcoming AFCON and CHAN engagements.

The good news for McKinstry is that all the locally based  players tested negative for COVID-19 and are free to travel.

Goalkeepers Charles Lukwago and Joel Mutakubwa are the two locally based custodians who will join skipper Denis Onyango and Salim Jamal Magoola.

Halid Lwaliwa, Samuel Kato and Patrick Mbowa are the defenders selected from the Uganda Premier League.

Shafiq Kagimu, Karim Watambala, Saidi Kyeyune, Ibrahim Orit, Bright Anukani and David Owori are the midfielders that will team up with the foreign based to make a case for themselves.

Vipers' Milton Kariisa was the only forward selected from the domestic league as Steven Mukwala was overlooked.

Timothy Awany, Kizito Luwago and Fahad Bayo, all based in Israel, miss out on the camp alongside US-based Michael Azira.

The camp is in line with preparations for the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers and the 2020 CHAN Finals to be held in Cameroon next year.
