Compressed season awaits Betway Power as Fuba ponder reforms

With the country still under lockdown, it is still unclear how much the Covid-19 pandemic will affect sports in the country.

What is clear for now however is that domestic basketball governing body Fuba will have to make adjustments in order to complete the domestic season as earlier planned in October.

This is after they were forced to postpone the start National Basketball League season in mid March following a government directive that means they will at least be two months behind schedule before any action takes place.

But in a recent interview however, Fuba president Nasser Sserunjogi maintained hope they can still conclude the season as earlier scheduled if they agree on a number of changes.

“We have plans to finish the season before end of October, if at all we start in the first week of June as we have projected, Sserunjogi stated.

Among the ideas proposed include topflight teams such as Betway sponsored Power playing more matches over a shortened period of time.

“The plan is not really to play a round robin as some people have suggested. The plan is to increase the number of games played per team each week," Sserunjogi noted.

"Teams have been playing one game each week, sometime once in two weeks but now teams shall play a minimum of two games and maximum of three in a week."

"We shall also have more games over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. We also intend to use multiple venues on a game day, also increase the number of game days."

"We also plan to have some weekends at UCU where we can use three courts at the same time. So that's the plan all other factors being constant and assuming we are able to start by June,” Sserunjogi added.

Power are still in search for the elusive sixth league title after losing 3-1 to UCU Canons in the best of semifinal playoffs last season.
