The Cityzens fell to a second defeat of the campaign, going down 2-0 away to league leaders Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend.

City manager Pep Guardiola lamented the fact that his team were well prepared for the game plan imposed by Jose Mourinho's Spurs, but conceded that they just weren't good enough on the day.

"It could be better, we played similar to how we have all season. We did not defend good for the first goal. They then defended so deep, they defended with six and it was not easy," Guardiola told BBC Match of the Day.

"We had our chances, but we couldn’t score and they made two or three chances on the counterattack and we lost the game.

He continued: "We knew before the game that you cannot give them the first goal. We had more chances than them but we lost. Mourinho’s teams are like this, you make a mistake and they punish you on the counterattack.

"Our possession play was good, but football is the boxes and that is where we were not good."

Burnley recorded a much needed win, a first of the season, on Monday evening. Chris Wood's early strike spearheaded the Clarets to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and out of the relegation zone.

The corresponding fixture last season ended in a 5-0 win for the Cityzens. Phil Foden (two), Riyad Mahrez (two) and David Silva found the back of the net for the hosts in a convincing victory.
