2019 Formula1 World Championship
Round 5, Spanish Grand Prix
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
12 May 2019
Charles Leclerc will look to take the fight to Mercedes at Round 5 of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship, the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, on Sunday 12 May.
The young Monegasque driver has thus far recorded three fifth-place finishes plus one podium at Round 2 in Bahrain, where he was on course for victory before suffering a technical issue with his car.
Leclerc arguably would have had a great chance to win at the previous race in Azerbaijan as well, but a mistake in qualifying, when he appeared to have the best pace of any driver, cost him a place at the front of the grid and his Sunday was then irreparably compromised.
Nonetheless, the Ferrari driver has perhaps shown more ability and hunger to challenge the Mercedes cars – even if more experienced teammate Sebastian Vettel has been more consistent of late and moved up to third on the Drivers’ Championship standings (Leclerc is fifth, trailing fourth-placed Max Verstappen of Red Bull by four points).
Ferrari showed great pace at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in pre-season testing and Leclerc will hope he can extract the maximum from the car in an effort to challenge the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, who have had it all their own way so far in 2019.
