Charles Leclerc hoping to rise in Baku

2019 Formula 1 season, Round 4

Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Baku City Circuit, Baku

Sunday 28 April

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc will aim to rise to prominence in Round 4 of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit on Sunday 28 April.

Leclerc came home in fifth place at the previous round in China, though his race was negatively affected by a strategy call from Ferrari which favoured his more experienced teammate Sebastian Vettel.

World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

Nonetheless, Leclerc will still feel disappointed that he was unable to challenge Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen for fourth place, having shown at the Bahrain GP that he had the pace to win races outright (he was denied the victory in the Middle east due to a late technical issue on his car).

The 21-year-old Monegasque’s first challenge will be to try and outpace his teammate. If he can get up amongst the Mercedes cars of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, then Ferrari will have no choice but to favour him when it comes to strategy calls.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.

Leclerc will be hoping that the Baku City Circuit, which has an intriguing mix of long straights, tight corners and twisty sections, allows him to get the best out of his ‘Prancing Horse’ and fight for a place on the podium.

In Drivers’ Championship terms, Leclerc is fifth on the log, just one behind his teammate Vettel. Ultimately, challenging the Mercedes duo at the top may prove too tough an ask, but battling his Ferrari stable-mate and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen for third is a goal within Leclerc’s reach.
