Changes to Betway Power roster ahead of new title hunt

Every start of the season brings new hope as challengers bid to end what has now become City Oilers’ six-year stronghold on the National Basketball League.

Betway Power have taken a leading role in that regard as losing finalists in three of those six years.

Over the weekend they again made their intentions clear by announcing three major aquisitions ahead of what is expected to be busy transfer period in the NBL.

The approach kept in line with the previous two seasons when they brought in albeit unsuccessfully, no less than six players.

The additions this time round come from their direct rivals which should further strengthen their position.

Experienced Silverbacks guard Syrus Kiviiri joins from Pemba Warriors to strengthen a back court that already includes Fahmy Sebatindira, Stephen Wundi, Paul Odong and David Opolot.

“From last season’s team the key players who were missing was a point guard and three-man,” Arnold Lando who coached the team last season, said of the new players.

Forward Samuel Aguttu joins from 2017 finalists KIU who lost 3-1 to the Oilers at the playoff semifinal stage last season.

“Odom and Madol were not very effective so we decided to add a player in that position,” he added of Agutu’s presence.

Congolese forward Libe Makala meanwhile joined from JKL who lost 3-1 to Power on their first appearance at the playoff semifinal stage

The three should help fill the void left by the departures of four players including Wundi who returned to South Sudan to be closer to his family.

Country mate Athiu Madol is also out of the team while Francis Kasinde has since moved to KCCA.

Long serving centre Michael Kojo meanwhile hang up his boots after playing at the club for more than a decade.

Power who last won the title in 2011 were losing finalists last season going down 4-1 to City Oilers in the best of seven final playoff series.

They are expected to tip off the new season against the same opponents on April 12
