Captain Galiwango earns Obua praise

Former Express coach George Ssimwogerere was hugely criticized in his second tenure as Express following a run of 11 wins, seven draws and 15 losses.

This culminated into his sacking after picking a paltry 21 points after 20 games that left the club languishing in 13th position on the 16-team log.

But despite the statistics it was not all gloom at the Betway Muteesa II stadium.

Among the most notable changes of Ssimwogerere’s term included moving captain Disan Galiwango to a more advanced role on the left side of a three-man attack alongside Frank Kalanda and Frank Ssenyondo.

The results have been a return of six league goals and four assists and a Cranes call up this season for Galiwango who has operated as a left back for much of his career.

His performances have not gone unnoticed with former Red Eagle and Cranes great David Obua believing he can help return the club to its glory days.

“Watched you play a couple of times and I thought with a couple of specific players around you we can compete for trophies. Enjoy , stay home and keep healthy,” tweeted Obua who featured for Express in 2003 and 2004.

Obua was in attendance at the Maroons stadium in Luzira as Express claimed a vital 1-0 win over Maroons in their last game before the league took a break in preparation for the Chan tournament.

Having struggled with an injury before the game, Galiwango came of the bench to turn the game on its head with an impressive second half performance that earned him a man of the match accolade.

This included a lung bursting run on the break in which he left several opposition defenders in his wake before showing composure by pulling the ball back for Frank Kalanda to score the game’s only goal.

The three points helped the Betway-sponsored Red Eagles open a seven point advantage over the teams occupying the three relegation places with five matches left after the current enforced break.
