Bubba Watson will look to make history at the 2021 edition of the Genesis Invitational, set for the Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California from 18 to 21 February.

The 42-year-old is a three-time champion at the event, triumphing in 2014 (269, -15, two strokes ahead of runner-up Dustin Johnson), 2016 (269, -15, one stroke ahead of Jason Kokrak and Adam Scott) and 2018 (272, -12, two strokes ahead of Kevin Na and Tony Finau).

This leaves him just one behind four-time champions Macdonald Smith and Lloyd Mangrum, with the 2021 edition presenting the American with the chance to write his name into the history books.

Watson comes into the Genesis Invitational on the back of a T22 finish at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, with signs that the two-time Masters Champion is getting back into the groove after some wobbles in form over the past couple of years.

The Florida-born player has emerged as an unlikely spokesperson for anxiety and mental health, hoping that he can share his own experiences and provide strength to others.

“I’ve sought help in many different ways, many different forms, trying to overcome it,” Watson said. “It really comes down to me being nuts. I’m trying to make light of it because using humour helps. But it’s all in my head. It’s all anxiety.

“I think more people are speaking out about mental issues and I want to be one of them. I think it’s the only way to get through it. We’re designed to talk to people, to air it out, and get help. I am old enough now to realise my life is a waste if I don’t share, if I don’t try to get better myself so I can help other people.”

Watson failed to make the cut at the 2020 edition of the Genesis Open, but will be amongst those expected to fight for the title this time around.
