After the first round of the
Uganda Cup, most of the big clubs are into the quarterfinals having had easy rides in their opening games.
Betway Kobs harvested a comprehensive 71-00 win from the long journey made to Mbale while defending champions Hima Cement Heathens made light work of Walukuba in Jinja. The two are not the only top sides to have made it to the next round. Last year’s losing finalists Buzz Pirates ran over Makerere Rams with a 59-00 win. Isaac Massa (2), Richard Odokere, Musa Muwonge, William Nkore, Raymond Emanzi, Ivan Magomu, Ayera Desire and Brian Ochan all crossed the white line as Bobby Musinguzi’s charges stormed quarters.
Conrad Wanyama and Magomu converted two and one respectively while Joel Anguyo was named man of the match. The shock of the weekend was in Jinja where hosts Jinja Hippos came from behind to defeat Makerere Impis 14-13.
Walkovers
While Kobs, Pirates and Heathens made easy prey of their opponents, Shell Rimula Rhinos and Warriors didn’t have to break any sweat to book their quarterfinals slots. Warriors travelled to Gulu to face Gulu Elephants but were awarded a walkover after the home side failed to raise numbers for the game. The side also failed to demarcate the playing area which was bushy and lacked posts. Rhinos, too got a walkover against UCU Shepherds.
Big Quarterfinal clashes
The quarter final stage is set and the clashes are mouthwatering. Kobs vs. Rhinos will be the biggest clash of the quarters. Ronnie Lutakome’s charges, having lost to Pirates at the semifinal stage last year, will be keen to avoid an early exit from the competition.
