KAMPALA. Going by the day one results at the Fiba Africa Zone V Club Championships, it would not be farfetched to predict a top two finish for Betway Power in the four-team Group B at the week-long tournament. The five-time domestic league champions got their tournament off to a winning start with what was an ultimately comfortable 87-55 win over Tanzania’s ABC at the Lugogo Arena on Sunday evening.

They will be favourites to make it two straight wins when they play Gondar City of Ethiopia in the late game on Monday evening. The Ethiopians lost 108-35 to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on an opening day that was marked by the huge scoring margins. Power though will want an improved start having appeared nervous in the opening quarter against ABC before eventually prevailing 15-3 in the opening period.

Betway Power

That set the tone for a straightforward triumph with coaches Arnold Lando and Chris Kyebambe giving game time to the entire roster. Fahmy Sebatindira played the most minutes at 27, scoring nine points but it was Paul Odong who top scored with 13 points and led four other players in double figures. Francis Kasinde contributed 12 points while the trio of Joseph Ikong, Nasser Gudi and Michael Kojo added 11 apiece with the last of those adding a further 11 rebounds. Power led 38-29 after break before a 27-9 run showed the gulf in class between the two teams.

Uganda’s other men’s representatives and reigning champions City Oilers will also be inaction later on Monday following up on a 93-46 win over another Tanzanian side Savio. There are eight men’s teams divided into two groups of four teams each competing for better placings before the knockout stages. The women’s category involves seven teams and is being played in a round-robin format with Uganda represented by KCCA Leopards and UCU Lady Canons. They were due to play Kenyan opposition yesterday after KCCA defeated APR  57-45 in the opening game of the tournament and the Lady Canons thumped Horseed Banadir from Somalia 108-42.
