News of domestic basketball governing body Fuba cancelling the 2020 season was pretty much expected especially with no date set for a return of sporting activities in the country.
Yet there was still obvious disappointment among the basketball fraternity once the pronouncement was made early on Friday morning.
“At a meeting held on the 23rd of July 2020, the FUBA executive committee made the following resolutions,” read part of the communication signed by Fuba president Nasser Sserunjogi.
That all 2020 basketball competitions as per the FUBA calendar with the exception of the Afrobasket qualifiers, are hereby cancelled,” statement added.
Betway Power coach Arnold Lando “Mchuda” expressed disappointment about the decision that he however believes was inevitable considering the current situation in the country.
“It is unfortunate. We are going to miss out on what we like as sportsmen, ,” he said of the decision before adding.
“It is tough on everyone because we were all looking forward to starting the season but I guess our lives matter the most. It is a tough decision but it is understandable.”
According to Lando, Power who are still stuck on five league titles since 2011, intended to use this season to rebuild before making a proper assault on the title in subsequent seasons.
“We had got in a number of new players so we were looking to have these players fit into the system about how Power plays.
Consequently, all contractual issues between players and their clubs will be handled in accordance with the contract laws of the country according to the communication made by Fuba.
Players that had registered with their clubs for the 2020 basketball season, without formal contracts will also be handled as per the FUBA rules and regulations of 2020 which provide for a default contract of two years. The two years will therefore start from 2021 onwards.
The executive committee is meanwhile expected to use this time to come up with a clear roadmap and plan for the 2021 basketball season which shall be communicated to all members not later than August 31 August 2020.
